SPATIAL INTERPOLATION OF MEAN ANNUAL PRECIPITATIONS IN SARDINIA. A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SEVERAL METHODS

ABSTRACT: Our study attempts to test several spatial interpolation methods used for the purpose of mapping the mean annual precipitations in the island of Sardinia (Italy). The spatial modelling is based on data from 243 meteorological stations. We tested the usefullness of regression analysis, ordinary kriuging, cokriging and residual kriging. The performance of each method was assessed by crossvalidation. Our results show that better results are achieved using residual kriging with altitude as predictor.
