The accuracy of SRTM model

ABSTRACT. – The accuracy of SRTM model. In our days the SRTM Digital Elevation Model has become a valuable database for relief analyses. Based on radar technology, which physically scans the topographic surface, it can be assumed that is more accurate then a DEM obtained from the contour lines of an analogue map. The paper tries to compare the SRTM model of a small area – about 30 km2 – from the Transylvanian Plain with a DEM derived from a 1:100000 scale topographic map. First the contour lines derived from the SRTM model and the contour lines from the map are compared. Then a series of analyses are made, trying to show by numeric expression the differences between the two models. Finally some conclusions are presented.
